Buccaneers Quotes: Friday, October 2, 2015

BUC BIT OF THE DAY: In four career games against Carolina, Tampa Bay RB Doug Martin has averaged 98.5 scrimmage yards per contest.
Below is a selection of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quotes from today’s earlier media availability:
Head Coach Lovie Smith
Running Back Doug Martin
(Opening Statement)
“They say it’s a big game at Raymond James this week, we see it that way. [It’s] another opportunity to play at home. [We] haven’t played our best ball here. [We] get another opportunity at that. Carolina is a good football team, defending champs, all of that. We know what’s at stake. [We] had an excellent week of practice. I feel like we are ready to go. We’ve been close a lot. It’s time for us to get over the hump.”
(On how kicker Kyle Brindza has practiced this week)
“[He’s] responded well. When you have a game like that you go out to the practice field and you start trying to get it through the goal posts. In practice he’s hit every one this week. That’s about all you can do until you get, of course, to the stadium. Every once in a while you have games like that. That’s one game. That’s not defining him. If we get an opportunity to kick field goals I won’t hesitate at all.”
(On tight ends Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Luke Stocker, center Evan Smith and cornerback Johnthan Banks statuses for Sunday’s game)
“I’ll say they didn’t practice today since that’s what I have to do. You can see why I wouldn’t say any more. When a guy doesn’t practice on a Friday you can draw your own conclusions with that. At the same time, every day of rest helps. If you just want to take it right up until we have more time and we’ll see how it plays out.”
(On his confidence level of only having two active tight ends or three active cornerbacks)
“That’s not an ideal position to be in, but [it] could be that. You get in a game and you’ll have injuries, so you have to have a plan two in place. We’ll have that, whether those players are able to go or not.”
(On running back Doug Martin back at practice today)
“It’s good to see him out there. Sometimes when a guy misses practice in a week, it’s about being ready for the weekend, especially with a running back like Doug. He knows the plays. Running back carrying the ball as much as they do for us, missing a day every once in a while isn’t the end of the world, but he was good to go today.”
(On how he’s feeling)
“I feel good. I feel good.”
(On if he banged his knee in Wednesday’s practice)
“Yeah, I nicked it. It was just one of those things, you know, a full day would probably be the best for it. I practiced today, because I nicked it early in practice and practiced the rest of the day so it’s fine. I’ll be perfect for the game.”
(On if he was happy the injury was minor)
“It was definitely a relief. When I first got it, I knew it wasn’t anything serious.”
(On how much does the team want the run game to be a steady part of the offense)
“We’ll get there. We went up against a strong defense with Houston. We’re going to get back to running [the ball] well and executing the offense, as a whole, better. This will be the game to show that.”
