Transcript: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Media Availability (5/24/18)

Below is a selection of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quotes from today’s earlier media availability:

Head Coach Dirk Koetter
Safety Justin Evans
Wide Receiver Chris Godwin

HEAD COACH DIRK KOETTER

(On the high number of interceptions today)
“A lot of interceptions today. I think they might have broken the One Buc [Place] interception record today. Too many, but good for the defense. Good job for those guys.”

(On how many rookies caught an interception today)
“A lot of guys. There was a bunch of them. We’ll count them up when we go inside, but there was a bunch.”

(On if he takes the high number of interceptions as a positive)
“This time of year, everything is 50/50. Half of the people are happy and half of the people are sad. You just have to build through it. We’re three into 13 OTA days and of course you want to see the defense take the ball away and you don’t want to see the offense turn it over.”

(On rookie cornerback Carlton Davis’ interception during practice)
“He’s been real consistent. All of the rookies that are practicing are holding their own and that’s why you draft them, that’s why you draft those guys. Carlton is off to a very fast start.”

(On the new national anthem policy)
“Well, obviously the league came out with a policy and when the league makes a policy, the league makes a policy. So, anything else right now is irrelevant, what I think about it or what anybody else thinks about it. It just happened yesterday so there’s going to be some time to work through it. The clubs are going to have to sit down with the decision makers and decide what the clubs are going to do individually. But, anything else, I’m on the record with what I think about the national anthem. In a perfect world, everybody would stand, that’s what I believe. Again, there’s a policy now and we’ll just have to work through it.”

(On if he thinks these policies will solve protest issues)
“I don’t know. I don’t know and it’s not up to me.”

(On if he knows what team policies the Buccaneers are going to institute)
“I don’t because again, it just happened yesterday and we haven’t had a chance to sit down. There’s not a time limit on it until we get to the fall. It is something that’s going to have to be worked through. A lot of people are coming out and commenting on it right now. I wasn’t privy to what was said in the meetings but I’m sure when ownership here decides who they want involved in the discussions, then they’ll let us know.”

(On if he’ll continue to have an open conversation with players on protest issues)
“I haven’t really given that a lot of thought because again, we don’t have any national anthems coming up until August but I always have in the past. I think it’s important to continue to work with the players. If you remember, I don’t really think this started out as a national anthem issue. It started out, that’s not what the protest was about. Again, we have a policy now and we’ll work through that policy and we’ll do what we’re supposed to do within the policy.”

(On what he’s seen from kicker Chandler Catanzaro)
“We’ve seen 10 kicks and he’s made nine of them, I think. Again, it’s just like anything else. Three days in shorts and Chandler has kicked twice. We haven’t even seen a kickoff yet. He’s kicked off over on the other field, but it’s just too early to tell. We like Chandler, we think he’s a good fit here, but time will tell.”

SAFETY JUSTIN EVANS

(On the biggest difference from where he was a year ago)
“Pretty much just having a better concept of the defense and what we’re trying to do. You’re more acclimated with the guys in the locker room. You’re developing bonds with each and every one so it’s just a better feel walking around and just being in your second year.”

(On how the rookie defensive backs have impressed him)
“They all have, every one of them. As far as knowing their information when we’re in the meeting rooms – they get called on and have to go up to the board and draw defenses and stuff. It was much better than I was at this time when I was here last year, so that’s really impressive. Then of course on the field, they’re here for a reason so they obviously can make plays and they’ve been making plays. They’ve been doing good, all of them.”

(On how this year’s defense is different than last year’s)
“This is more of a bond. Like I said earlier, Coach is trying to work on being a complete team so we’re doing different things. We went in the indoor and had a big team day. He’s just trying to make everybody bond together and that’s what it takes to become a better team because everyone has talent so you just have to put that talent together.”

(On the League’s new National Anthem rules)
“Today was my first day hearing about it so I don’t know many details on that. So, I really don’t know. I’m pretty sure no one will discuss it right now because, like I said, I just found out about it today. Once everybody learns about it, I’m sure they’ll speak their mind on it. Each person has their own opinion, so we’ll see.”

WIDE RECEIVER CHRIS GODWIN

(On his mindset heading into his second season)
“Honestly my thoughts are the same as they are any time I go into anything that involves football. I’m just trying to get better one day at a time and I feel like that mindset has gotten me to where I’m at now and I’m not going to change it. I take it one day at a time and whatever happens this season is what happens. But I’m going to go out there and give it my all and I always have.”

(On having a touchdown in the last game of last season)
“I think it’s being conscious of the past but not harping on it. That was a great play in my career thus far but that’s not the only play I’m trying to make. I look back on it as an accomplishment but I’m trying to take it day-by-day and keep improving so that I can make more catches like those.”

(On areas where he needs to improve)
“One thing that I would like to improve on is my play speed. I want to keep playing fast and keep getting more and more comfortable so that when I’m getting in and out of my routes, I’m creating more and more separation and helping my team as much as I can.”

(On the league’s new national anthem rules)
“We haven’t really discussed it much. Honestly, I’m going into my second year so the only thing I’m really worried about right now is getting better each and every day. Coming out here, enjoying OTAs, enjoying the process of playing ball and whatever happens during the season, everybody will discuss it when it comes. I’m just focused on ball right now.”
