The National Football League announced today that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston has been voted FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week for Week One.
This is the second career FedEx Air Player of the Week Award for Winston, after winning the award in Week 11 of 2015.
At the Atlanta Falcons this past week, Winston completed 23-of-32 passes (71.9 pct.) for 281 yards, with four touchdowns and a passer rating of 125.1 in a 31-24 victory. His four touchdown passes are the second-most in an opening game in franchise history, while his passer rating is the third-highest and his 281 passing yards are the fourth-highest.
The Week One contest marked the second time in Winston’s career he has thrown for at least four touchdown passes. In just 17 career games, he has become one of only four Buccaneers quarterbacks to have multiple games with four or more touchdowns, joining Brad Johnson (four such games in 49 games played), Steve DeBerg (two such games in 64 games played) and Doug Williams (two such games in 67 games played).
Winston is currently tied for the NFL lead with four touchdown passes, the first time a Buccaneers quarterback has held or tied for the NFL lead in passing touchdowns since Brad Johnson in Week 12 of 2003. Winston also ranks in the top five in the league in passer rating (125.1 - third), yards per attempt (8.78 - third) and completion percentage (71.9 - fifth).
Winston is the first player in team history to win both NFC Offensive Player of the Week and FedEx Air Player of the Week in the same week. Winston’s two FedEx Air Player of the Week awards are tied for the most in franchise history (also Josh Freeman).
