BUCCANEERS RB DOUG MARTIN & QB JAMEIS WINSTON NOMINATED FOR NFL HONORS

The National Football League today revealed its nominees for FedEx Ground Player of the Year, nominating running back Doug Martin, as well as Pepsi Rookie of the Year and Castrol EDGE Performer of the Year, with quarterback Jameis Winston being nominated for each.

Martin is one of three players, along with Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and St. Louis rams running back Todd Gurley, to be nominated for FedEx Ground Player of the Year. This season, Martin, who was named FedEx Ground Player of the Week twice this past season, started all 16 games for Tampa Bay, recording 288 carries for 1,402 rushing yards and six touchdowns, with 33 catches for 271 yards and one touchdown.

Martin’s 1,402 rushing yards were the second-most in the NFL, while his 1,673 yards from scrimmage were the fourth-most in the league. He averaged 4.87 yards per carry, the highest mark in the NFL by any running back with at least 250 carries since 2013 (LeSean McCoy, 5.12 on 314 carries).

Winston started all 16 games for Tampa Bay, throwing for 4,042 yards and 22 touchdown passes, with six rushing touchdowns. He is one of five players nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Year, along with Gurley, Oakland Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper, Seattle Seahawks Wide Receiver/Punt Returner/Kick Returner Tyler Lockett and Kansas City Cornerback Marcus Peters.

Winston, who won three Pepsi Rookie of the Week awards (Weeks 2, 5 & 11), had the third-most passing yards by a rookie in NFL history (4,042) and the second-most ever by a Buccaneers quarterback. His 22 touchdown passes are the fourth-most by a rookie in NFL history and tied for the fourth-most in a single season by a Buccaneers quarterback. His combined 28 touchdowns (22 passing, six rushing) are the most by a quarterback in Buccaneers history and tie for the third-most by a rookie in NFL history.

Winston is also one of five players nominated for the Castrol EDGE Clutch Performer of the Year, alongside New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski and defensive end Khalil Mack. The “Castrol EDGE Clutch Performer of the Year” is the best performer or performance of a week that represents strength in key moments.

Facing the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13, Winston earned the Castrol EDGE Clutch Performer of the Week after leading a 12-play, 80-yard drive to win the game, which included a 20-yard run on third-and-19 that prolonged the drive. Winston connected with Mike Evans on a six-yard touchdown that proved to be the winning score. For the game, Winston completed 18-of-27 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown, while adding a rushing score.
