BUCCANEERS SIGN FREE AGENT QB MCCOWN AND T COLLINS
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that they have signed quarterback Josh McCown and tackle Anthony Collins as unrestricted free agents.
McCown (6-4, 213), entering his 12th NFL season, spent the last three years with the Chicago Bears (2011-13). In 2013, he enjoyed the best season of his career, playing in eight games (five starts) and setting career highs in completion percentage (66.5 pct.), yards per attempt (8.2 YPA), passing touchdowns (13) and passer rating (109.0). McCown’s passer rating was the third-highest in the NFL, while his 0.4 interception percentage was the best in the league. McCown won NFC Offensive Player of the Week in Week 14, completing 27-of-36 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns, while adding a rushing touchdown.
Originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round (81st overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft, McCown played for Arizona (2002-05), Detroit (2006), Oakland (2007) and Carolina (2008-09) before joining the Bears. Over the course of his career, McCown has completed 794-of-1,337 passes (59.4 pct.) for 8,827 yards with 50 touchdowns and 45 interceptions. He has also added 152 rushes for 706 yards and four touchdowns, while catching three passes for 10 yards.
A native of Jacksonville, Texas, McCown, who will wear jersey No. 12, played three collegiate seasons at Southern Methodist (1998-2000), before finishing his career at Sam Houston State (2001). His brother Luke, who played for Tampa Bay from 2005-08, entered the league as a fourth-round selection of the Cleveland Browns in 2004 and spent the 2013 season with the New Orleans Saints.
Collins (6-5, 315) comes to Tampa Bay after spending his first six seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals (2008-13). During his career, Collins has played in 59 games with 25 starts, including starting the final five games of the 2013 season. A versatile player, he has recorded starts at both left and right tackle, including starting at left tackle in the Bengals’ 2013 Wild Card playoff game against San Diego.
Collins was originally drafted by Cincinnati in the fourth round (112th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Kansas, where he played in 32 games during his three-year career (2005-07), earning first-team All-Big 12 honors following his junior season. Collins is a native of Beaumont, Texas.
