The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that they have signed free agent safety Chris Conte and defensive tackle Henry Melton.
There will be a media availability introducing Conte and Melton at noon today at One Buccaneer Place.
Conte (6-2, 203) joins Tampa Bay from the Chicago Bears, where he played four seasons (2011-14), recording 52 starts in 57 games played. During his career, Conte has recorded 231 tackles, 21 passes defensed, nine interceptions (returned 124 yards), one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. In 2014, he tied a career high with three interceptions on the season.
Originally entering the league as a third-round selection (93rd overall) by Chicago in the 2011 NFL Draft, Conte played collegiately at the University of California, earning first-team All-Pac 10 honors as a senior.
Melton (6-3, 290) comes to Tampa Bay after spending the 2014 season with the Dallas Cowboys. Melton originally entered the league as a fourth-round pick (105th overall) of Chicago in the 2009 NFL Draft and spent the first four years of his career with the Bears (2010-13). A former standout at the University of Texas, Melton has played in 64 career games, with 35 starts, totaling 101 tackles, 20.5 sacks, five passes defensed, four fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. The Desoto, Texas, native earned a Pro Bowl berth following the 2012 season, when he recorded 6.0 sacks, tied for the fifth-most by an NFL defensive tackle.
