Tampa Bay Buccaneers Halftime Quotes (8/11/17)

HEAD COACH DIRK KOETTER

(On the opening drive)
“We’ve been backed up a couple times tonight and got it out of trouble. It was a good start. One of our things is we have to finish for touchdowns. It wasn’t perfect, but it’s better than a kick in the butt.”

(On cornerback Vernon Hargreaves’ interception)
“That was a huge play. He picked that thing off on the one-yard line. We challenged Vernon to take the ball away and he’s done it.”

TIGHT END CAMERON BRATE

(On performance of the first-team offense)
“It felt really good to get out there again. Jameis has worked with Mike [Evans] and me a ton so it makes sense he came out firing to us today. I thought we did a really good job as an offense. It feels like at this stage of the preseason the defenses are always ahead of the offenses, so for us to move the ball like we did, it’s really promising. We have to score touchdowns in the red zone to be satisfied though.”

(On converting third downs)
“Third down is the money down in the NFL. We have such a strong connection between Jameis [Winston] and Mike [Evans] that the defense gravitates towards Mike so it opens up a lot of stuff for the other guys – me, Adam [Humphries], DeSean [Jackson], O.J. [Howard]. We didn’t finish the first drive the way we wanted to, settling for a field goal, but it was a promising start.”

CORNERBACK VERNON HARGREAVES III

(On his goal-line interception)
“That’s obviously a big play, stopping them from getting points. I just tried to make a play. They came out, they had tight splits, I figured it may be something outside and I just took a chance and it happened to work out for me.”

(On if his confidence is growing)
“I don’t think I have a lack of confidence, but one thing I did lack was patience. I was rushing, trying to be the best already, but I had to go back in the office, go back, get to work, work on my craft and it’s paying off for me. I feel better, I feel like a different player.”

DEFENSIVE TACKLE GERALD MCCOY

(On getting the first chance to play against another team this season)
“It felt good. Preseason game number one, at this point in my career, is just kind of knocking the rust off, getting used to another snap count, really just hitting somebody else. We were kind of feeling things out and were a little rusty, I think that showed. It’s not something that can’t be fixed – it’s just rust.”

(On the defense’s overall play)
“You just don’t know yet. You’ve got to see what’s going to show up on the film. We’ll see once we get back to the film room. It just felt good to be back out there. . I always expect the first preseason game to be full of mistakes. It’s rare you go into a first preseason game, your feet are always right, you step straight and you don’t lose on a rush. That’s how the first preseason game goes. It’s going to be rusty, but that’s what it’s for. They’re keeping score, so obviously we want to win, but we’ll see how it looks on film. We’ve got a lot to fix though.”

(On cornerback Vernon Hargreaves’ goal-line interception)
“It was great. We ran a zero blitz, put some pressure on them, made them get the ball out fast and Vernon jumped the route and made a great play. That’s why we brought him here. I expect that from him all year. He’s grown up a lot. He’s maturing and I’ve been saying, the big thing for him is his maturity. The more he matures, the better he’s going to get. He made a great play.”
